Catalog Description:
Overview of computer information systems. Introduces computer hardware, software, procedures and human resources. Explores integration and applications in business and other segments in society. Fundamentals of computer problem solving and programming may be discussed and applied.
Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
A. Identify the basic components of a computer system.
B. Explain basic Internet functions.
C. Demonstrate basic understanding of commonly used applications.
D. Explain the impact of computers on society and explore computer careers.
E. Identify fundamental programming structures and demonstrate proficiency in basic operating system functions.

Description of Methods of Evaluation:
1. Participation: Points will be awarded for attendance and completion of learning activities (Participation (8 classes and 4 learning activities) — 10% of grade).
2. Quizzes: Quizzes are online and will consist of True/False, Multiple Choice, and Short-answer questions (Quizzes (11 quizzes) — 15% of grade).
3. Labs: Will be given in the form of hand-outs and consist of hands-on activities in the various applications, OS, and Internet (Labs (8 labs) — 25% of grade).
4. Midterm Exam: Online and consists of 50 combined True/False and Multiple Choice questions (Midterm Exam — 25% of grade).
5. Final Exam: Online and consists of 50 combined True/False and Multiple Choice questions (Final Exam — 25% of grade).
Additional Course Information (i.e. instructional methods, out-of-class activities, etc.):
1. Supplies: It is recommended that students have a method of saving class work; i.e., USB drive, floppy disk, etc. The recommended USB drive can be found on the booklist.
2. Homework/Out-of-Class Activities: Sufficient time will be given for computer labs in the classroom (all required software is provided).

Additional Information from the Instructor (make-up exams, rounding of grades, cell phone/pagers, etc.):
1. Late Assignments: Labs and quizzes will receive a 25% deduction if submitted within one week of the due date. No credit will be given beyond one week.
2. Make-up Exams: Must be completed at the next regularly scheduled class meeting (exams will not suffer a 25% deduction).
3. Absences: Contact the instructor prior to 4:00 p.m. on the scheduled class date if you will be absent that class period.
4. Class Etiquette:
a. Computer monitors should be turned off during class lectures.
b. Cell phones should be set to vibrate during class period. Under no circumstances should you answer your phone during class. If you must answer your phone, please exit the classroom first.
